Starke County Economic Development Foundation highlights startup awards, CDL training slots and state bills to watch

The foundation hosted a business workshop March 26 and the 'Starke Tank' startup competition April 25; it awarded $12,000 to Hannah's Greenhouse (first place) and $6,000 to CV Makes and Tapes (second place). The foundation also ran a junior start competition that awarded doubled school prizes to winning teams.
The foundation said it had secured five CDL training grant placements through a partnership with Ivy Tech and the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, enabling five local people to receive training funded up to $5,000 per employee. The presenter emphasized the program requires a 25% wage increase after training as a condition of the grant.
The presenter listed state bills for commissioners to monitor, including measures affecting DLGF reporting and TIF rules, annexation reform bills, water and wastewater extension authority, local income tax proposals, and township reorganization and consolidation measures that could affect county and township governance.
Commissioners thanked the presenter and were encouraged to follow up if they wanted more detailed legislative briefings or program explanations at a future meeting.
