Butte-Silver Bow council refers resident's call for impeachment resolution to Judiciary Committee

Mark Phillip of 1150 W. Gold told the Council of Commissioners on April 1 that he wanted Butte to "affirm that Butte American finds cause for and recommends that the U.S. House of Representatives vote to impeach President Trump," citing concerns about what he described as the conduct of the war and the economy.
Phillip characterized the situation as a national issue with local import and said, "This is an illegal war," adding that he did not see his request as partisan, saying, "This is not partisan."
Commissioner Hattie Thatcher said the topic appeared outside the council's normal, nonpartisan duties and suggested a letter of support might be more appropriate than a local resolution. County Attorney Enrooth told the council that the attorney's office "will not be writing the resolution," and that any draft would need to come from the petitioner.
Commissioner John Morgan said he would be willing to sign a letter prepared by Phillip if council members preferred that route. After brief discussion, Morgan moved and Thatcher seconded a motion to refer Communication No. 2026-175 to the Judiciary Committee for further consideration; the motion passed 11 yea, 0 nay.
The referral places the request on the Judiciary Committee's agenda; no resolution was drafted or adopted by the full council on April 1.
