Butte-Silver Bow coroner reports caseload, seeks accreditation and flags hundreds of unclaimed cremains

Jason Parish, Butte-Silver Bow coroner, presented a status report to the Council of Commissioners on April 1, saying the office handled 100 cases from Jan. 1 through March 31, 2026, and that 34 of those were reported for investigation.

Parish gave a breakdown of case outcomes: 4 complete autopsies, 12 natural deaths, 3 accidents, 2 suicides, 4 cases under investigation and 3 pending. He stressed the office’s 24/7 availability and instructed the public that "to report a death, citizens are directed to call 9-1-1." The figures were provided as part of the Coroner's Office presentation and accompanying slides.

Parish outlined a push for formal accreditation, saying the office is "on track to be accredited by Fall 2026" and noting staff participation in professional organizations and board-certification efforts. He said the agency has developed a procedural manual to standardize investigations and public interactions.

A major operational challenge Parish flagged was the disposition of unclaimed cremains. He said the office is coordinating with Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery and local funeral homes on a multi-year project to provide long-term disposition for hundreds of unclaimed remains, a task that will require additional time and funding.

The council received the report; no formal legislative action or vote on the Coroner's Office recommendations was taken at the meeting. Parish concluded by inviting questions from commissioners.
