Board hears FY27 budget preview; state aid changes could help smaller counties

At the May 20 meeting, the Oconee County Library Board received a preview of the FY27 budget but had not yet been provided the detailed backup materials from county finance.
The Library Director (speaker 5) told trustees that state lawmakers advanced a change that raises the minimum state aid for smaller counties from $150,000 to $200,000 and that the system would continue to receive $275 per capita. "We will still get the $275 per capita that we got just the fiscal year that we're just ending," the director said, adding an estimate that the system's state aid would be about $216,800 next year but noting she had not seen the official backup.
Board members said they remain concerned about whether proposed county budget allocations will cover professional line items, part-time staffing increases and other priorities the system has requested. The director said the budget appeared to have passed a first reading at county council but had not completed second reading, so the final figures and line-item coverage were still pending.
Trustees plan to review official backup when it becomes available and to consider how to adjust system plans if the county does not include requested increases. The board did not take formal action on the budget at the meeting.
