Placer County board hears Auburn Library reopening timeline, Library-on-Wheels preview and budget request

The Placer County Library Advisory Board heard updates Feb. 18, 2026, on the Auburn Library renovation schedule, a new Library-on-Wheels vehicle and a supplemental budget request ahead of the county’s June budget action.
Sophie Bruno, library staff and serving as the LAB secretary, told the board that Auburn Library construction is on schedule through the end of March and that staff will begin installing shelves, furniture and materials once the county turns the building back over to the library. Bruno said staff expect "over 90K items to be moved back in prior to opening." Bruno also listed completed and in-progress upgrades, including waterproofing, an elevator, sprinkler work, lighting and solar tubes, a courtyard entrance, restroom upgrades, staff workroom improvements and upgraded electrical panels.
The updates matter because they set a timeline for public access to the renovated space and inform planning for a community reopening. Bruno said the county submitted a status-quo budget with one supplemental request to cover AMH and finishing touches for Auburn, to be installed in the former Quiet Study Room; staff are "anticipating budget to be approved in June 2026."
Board members and Friends of the Library representatives described outreach and community engagement tied to the reopening. Kathleen Edwards, reporting for the Auburn Friends of the Library, said the group hosted a "We Love Our Library" dinner with about 140 attendees where library staff presented renovation details and displayed project visuals. Edwards reported February used-book sales of about $1,228 and about 30 active volunteers supporting sales.
Staff also announced that a new Library-on-Wheels (LMS) van has arrived and will visit brick-and-mortar locations on Fridays in March, with scheduled stops listed in the meeting packet (for example, RL & GB on March 6 and AU & CX on March 13). Bruno described vehicle features including a hydraulic lift, an awning and service window for inclement weather, four specialty bookcarts that click in, a backup camera and a branded vehicle wrap.
Next steps: staff said they will provide more detailed updates at the LAB’s May meeting and plan a reopening celebration and ribbon-cutting; the supplemental budget request will proceed through the county process with an expected June decision.
