Caroline County raises poll worker pay to $250 a day; Chair Forehand elected for 2026

The Caroline County Board of Supervisors voted Jan. 13 to increase compensation for election poll workers from $150 to $250 per day and to raise pay for Chief and Assistant Chief positions from $200 to $300 per day. Deputy County Administrator Alan Partin said the proposal (initiated by Supervisor Floyd W. Thomas) would cost an estimated additional $30,400 based on 76 poll workers and four elections in 2026; the Board approved the increase unanimously.
Earlier in the evening the Board completed its organizational business for 2026. Supervisor Jeffery M. Sili nominated Supervisor Clayton T. Forehand for Chair (motion seconded by Supervisor Nancy L. Long); the nomination carried unanimously and Forehand assumed the chair. Supervisor Jeffrey S. Black nominated Supervisor Jeffery M. Sili for Vice Chair; that motion also passed unanimously. The Board also amended its 2026 meeting schedule by moving the July 14 meeting to June 23 to accommodate anticipated public hearings and budget work.
Board members noted that poll worker pay had not been adjusted in at least a decade and that current pay under previous rates fell below minimum wage for long election-day shifts; tax-reporting implications (1099-NEC) if compensation exceeds $600 in a calendar year were noted but not resolved during the meeting.
