Director McEwen briefed the committee on the county tax foreclosure list and collection options.
McEwen said the county currently has about 140 parcels on the foreclosure list and staff are making phone calls, particularly to residential property owners, to notify them about the need to make amends, pay outstanding taxes, or enter an installment agreement. He invited committee members to ask for a town-specific list if they wanted details.
When asked how many years before a property proceeds to foreclosure, McEwen said residential properties are three years and commercial properties are two years. A staff member noted that as of May, the new installment agreements are available on a monthly basis and that the program allows a 24-payment schedule under the updated statute and tax system.
No formal change to county foreclosure policy was adopted at the meeting; staff said outreach will continue and owners will be informed of installment-plan options.
