The Township of Ocean School District opened its regular board meeting with extensive recognitions of student and community achievements.
Miss Walden, speaking for district staff, highlighted spring athletics and academic honors, including Andrew Vigiano's sectional wins in hurdles and Leah Starkey's meet record performance. Student representatives reported team records in baseball, lacrosse and softball, and multiple students qualified for higher-level competitions.
The board recognized Lindsay Burnett as the 2026 Miss Rumphius Award recipient from the New Jersey Center for the Book for her "Home in Your Pocket" community literacy project. Miss Walden said the award reflected the program's focus on partnering with local businesses to bring student writing to the broader community.
Students who earned distinctions on the American Association of Teachers of Italian exam and winners of the New Jersey Water Environment Association essay contest were also honored. The board acknowledged a national flag-design contest winner, Julia Brandenburg, whose flag will be produced for the RV Marcus G. Langseth's 2026 research season.
Miss Walden thanked local businesses and organizations for supporting teacher appreciation week and other events, naming several community partners that provided donations, discounts or volunteer support. "We do just want to thank the businesses in our community that showed their support and gave their appreciation to our wonderful staff," she said.
The recognitions closed with parents and staff invited forward for photos and brief congratulations; the meeting then moved on to routine business.
