Belle Vernon Area SD students honored; esports team to play at state championship

At its May 19 meeting the Belle Vernon Area SD recognized student-of-the-month and artists of the month at multiple schools and the high school esports Rocket League team qualified for the state championship May 30 at Mount Aloysius.
The Belle Vernon Area School District honored students from elementary through high school on May 19 and celebrated the high school esports club's recent competitive success.
Darren Viquero, principal at Ross Traver Elementary (S6), recognized seven students for meeting the school's PBIS 'PAWS' standard for safety and positive behavior, reading brief teacher nominations for each honoree.
Marion Elementary representatives introduced Mrs. Berkey, the school's art teacher, who named her 'Artists of the Month' and described the selection criteria, which prioritize talent, creativity, kindness and willingness to help peers.
At the high school, teacher and esports club sponsor Mr. Waitman (S11) reported the club fielded roughly 30 students across ten teams this year. He said three teams qualified for conference championship play; two finished second in their brackets while one team won its conference in Rocket League and has qualified for the state championship May 30 at Mount Aloysius. Waitman named four players present: Aiden Giordano, Eric Russell, Owen Villella and Ethan Jurovich; two other qualifiers (Kendra Frank and Maddie Gray) were not at the meeting. "So on May 30... these guys are gonna be heading out to Mount Aloysius, and we're gonna be competing," Waitman said.
Board members congratulated the students and coaches, and allowed time for photos before moving on to the regular agenda.
What’s next: The esports competitors will play at the state championship on May 30; the district acknowledged the students' achievements during the meeting.
