The Greensburg Salem School District board on May 20 voted unanimously to adopt a proposed final general fund budget for fiscal year 2026–27 for public advertisement and inspection, even as several board members expressed concern that the preliminary document shows a deficit and could lead to staffing reductions.
The proposed budget lists total expenditures of $55,655,957 and total revenues of $54,262,134. A board member who spoke during the discussion said the shortfall raised immediate worries about classroom impacts: “I guess I’m concerned about, you know, even though it’s just a preliminary budget … I have some concerns about passing one that’s in a deficit, and I also have concerns about … losing five teachers and how that will affect our classroom sizes and the quality of education,” the board member said.
Superintendent and administration representatives responded that the vote to adopt the proposed final budget tonight is a procedural step required by state timelines so the document can be advertised and made available for public inspection. “The law requires you to do this before you get that,” the superintendent said, adding that additional finance meetings are scheduled before final adoption and that the district expects to continue adjusting the numbers in the coming weeks.
Board members who spoke described the proposed-advertise step as part of a multi-step budget process: administration will continue work to reduce the projected deficit and meet again prior to the final vote. The board took a roll-call vote to advertise the proposed budget and the motion passed 7–0.
During public comment, a resident who identified himself as Father Steven asked about recent debt payments and the district’s fund balance. District staff said final fund-balance figures were not yet available but estimated a change of roughly $178,000 relative to prior projections and committed to providing more precise numbers at the June meeting and in the audit.
What’s next: the district will continue scheduled finance meetings and is expected to present a revised budget for final consideration at the June board voting meeting, after public inspection and additional adjustments.
