Oxford district to study costs of elevating indoor track from club to official sport

The Oxford Area School District discussed making its indoor track club an official, district-sponsored sport at the May 19 athletics committee meeting and again during the full-board reports. The club, active since 2015 with 30—40 participants annually, currently covers travel and meet fees through boosters while the district provides transportation; coaches have volunteered without supplemental stipends.
Miss Sterling told the committee that if indoor track becomes an official sport the district would likely be responsible for increased transportation costs, additional meets and coach supplemental stipends. Mr. Cooney said the district will need a more detailed schedule to determine whether an existing supplemental contract slot could mirror the new position. Committee members asked Sterling to draft schedules and estimated costs for the number of meets and typical entry fees so the finance and negotiations committees can analyze budget impacts.
The committee tabled further action until the next athletics committee meeting to allow time for schedule development and supplemental-range recommendations. The board asked that the athletic director include estimates for coach stipends, transportation, and the number of additional meets that would be added if the sport becomes officially sponsored.
Next steps: Miss Sterling to provide a proposed indoor meet schedule, count of meets and projected costs for the committee and negotiations team.
