Tumwater public safety updates: paramedic graduation, North Station work and police body cameras with translation feature

Fire Chief Brian Hurley briefed the commission that one paramedic firefighter is in the fire academy with graduation slated for June 20 and that recent employee absences for medical and family reasons are easing. Hurley said the North Station (2nd Avenue) intersection project will host a temporary mobile structure in early June and that construction drawings are being finalized with an anticipated construction start in early 2027.
"We have 1 paramedic firefighter in fire academy. That's slated to end, graduation on June 20," Hurley said.
Acting Police Chief Carlos Keyless updated commissioners on recruiting and technology in the police department. He reported a recent academy graduate and hires pending academy slots, five current vacancies and ongoing oral boards and background checks. Keyless also described newly deployed body-worn cameras that, he said, have eased evidence uploading and include a translation function that can auto-detect or be set to translate multiple languages. "I think it does, like it can detect up to 51 different languages," Keyless said.
The commission took no formal action on these operational updates. The next commission meeting is scheduled for June 11.
