Shikellamy to seek bids to expand Oaklyn Elementary parking; cafeteria flooring options under review

Shikellamy School District officials said they will advance a bid-ready plan to expand the Oaklyn Elementary School parking lot while administrators evaluate options to address cosmetic flooring problems in district cafeterias.
At a Jan. 8 work session, Michael Thomas of Meck‑Tech presented a recommended plan that would increase Oaklyn’s parking from 61 spaces to 74, including four ADA‑compliant spaces. He estimated the base-bid cost at roughly $160,000–$200,000 and discussed one alternate that would cost about $360,000–$400,000. Thomas said permitting is expected next week and noted township concerns about work on Oak Street; the board indicated it was acceptable to submit plans and proceed with the bid process.
Why it matters: Oaklyn’s lot serves about 60 staff members daily, and the project is framed as addressing immediate day‑to‑day parking needs. Moving forward with a base bid will allow the district to address short‑term capacity while retaining the option to consider a larger alternate scope later.
Board discussion also covered other facilities work. Administrators described a cosmetic flooring issue in the middle school cafeteria: options presented included releasing previously withheld funds to accept the floor as installed or requiring the contractor to perform corrective work. Keeping the existing floor would yield an estimated savings of about $23,000; administrators said they will arrange for an additional epoxy contractor to inspect the floor and will provide photographs to the board. Several board members asked administration to explore alternatives to carpet, such as VCT, for Oaklyn, Priestley and Chief Shikellamy elementary schools, and requested a flooring-company representative present options at the February voting meeting. Cafeteria-related payments, administrators noted, can be charged to the cafeteria fund.
Next steps: Staff will pursue permits for the Oaklyn plan, proceed with the bid process, collect independent contractor review and photographs for the cafeteria flooring issue, and bring flooring options and a flooring‑vendor presentation to the February meeting. The Oaklyn plan and related items will appear on the Jan. 15 voting agenda as appropriate.
