Council creates new land‑use classification for "veterinary dentistry," approves conditional use in GO zone

The Murray City Council on May 19 unanimously adopted an ordinance to add land‑use classification number 8230 for "veterinary dentistry" to the city's standard land‑use code and to allow the use as a conditional use in the GO (General Office) zoning district.
Chad Wilkinson, planning staff, told the council the request is the first of its kind under a recent state law that lets an applicant ask a city to designate a previously unlisted use. "This is the first time we've had an application request of this kind," Wilkinson said, noting the use is intended to be outpatient only (no overnight boarding or kennels) and that staff recommended approval with the limits described in the proposed code language.
Wilkinson explained that because state law treats these petitions differently, the request does not go to the Planning Commission and instead goes directly to the legislative body for decision. Staff said the city will adopt a formal procedural rule for future requests to mirror the practice used for the current application.
There were no public speakers at the hearing. A motion to adopt the ordinance was made and seconded; the council voted in favor and the ordinance was approved on first reading. The council also separately adopted the code change to list the new use as a conditional use in the GO zone.
