Shikellamy board hears block-party idea, library concerns and flags urgent gym-entrance repair

Director Slade Shreck led a brief Policy Committee review of proposed changes to BP‑103 and BP‑104 and said the revised policies will be placed on the voting agenda with a motion to waive the second reading. The board also discussed a community member’s idea, originating from a Facebook post by Ellie Kashuba, to host a district-wide block party in August as a "Welcome Back" event; Shreck and Chair Tara Sprenkel expressed support and administration will meet with Kashuba and PTA groups to develop a formal proposal.
Director Julie Brosius reported on the Degenstein Library Board meeting and raised literacy-incentive ideas and the recent Warrior Run School District cell-phone ban as a policy worth exploring. Brosius also reminded the board of the district’s customary May donation to local public libraries.
Superintendent Jeremy Winn reported a safety concern at the middle school gym entrance: a broken railing has created a tripping hazard. Administration obtained a quote to replace approximately 32 feet of concrete at an estimated cost of $9,200 and Winn asked permission to add the repair to next week’s agenda; he characterized the repair as urgent.
Director Dennis Deitrich requested the board explore adding an additional public-comment opportunity to meetings; members noted such a change would require a policy amendment. The principals also provided building updates and the board recognized several staff members for statewide and national awards. Daily Item reporter Francis Scarcella said he will be highlighting district activities in upcoming coverage. The meeting adjourned at 8:09 p.m.; the board went into an executive session for personnel and property matters afterward.
