Alanson council approves dump trailer purchase, discusses recycling, leaf pickup and security grant

The Village of Alanson council approved purchase of a dump trailer and approved a Par Plan grant application for security equipment at its Feb. 9 meeting.
Street Commissioner Jason Losey urged moving county recycling containers to free space for DPW storage and proposed starting curbside leaf pickup; he said the drop‑off site is filling with commercial and residential debris. Losey presented two quotes for a 16‑foot dump trailer: $14,595 from Petoskey RV USA and $12,500 from Beck's Trailer Superstore. President Jamie Breithaupt moved to purchase a dump trailer and the council approved the motion 5‑0.
Breithaupt reported the Par Plan grant cycle is open; the grant can provide up to $2,500 for security equipment such as body cameras, fixed cameras and lighting. Breithaupt said he would like more sophisticated cameras at the Swing Bridge and suggested cameras at the boathouse as well; Trustee Wayne McPhall moved Resolution #3 of 2026 to apply for the grant and the council approved it unanimously.
Breithaupt also noted the village is in a five‑year curbside recycling contract with Emmet County DPW (current pickup cost $3.40 per unit with a 2% annual increase) and that he will try to negotiate the annual increase down. The council accepted the resignation of Planning & Zoning member Deanna Yockey and Breithaupt reminded potential trustee candidates that filing paperwork is due in July for the November ballot.
