Curriculum, special education and staffing updates: Muskegon Public Schools to sign state partnership; four CTE programs receive 61V funding

Curriculum and instruction staff told the board workshop on April 14 that a partnership agreement has been approved by the State and is scheduled to be signed April 23, and that four of six career-and-technical-education (CTE) applications were approved for 61V funding; the district will reapply for the remaining two during a second round.
Deanna Holman presented the curriculum update and reported the partnership approval and CTE funding status. Jamie Venema reported that the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) completed its visit, and that staff discussed how special education will integrate into Ford NGL; Venema said the department is setting up for the next school year and seeking more certified special-education staff.
Sheila Brown in human resources said the district is addressing staffing and section numbers, recorded three retirements for the year, noted that the district has been designated a parapro testing site, and described work to improve substitute onboarding and the HR–curriculum–buildings workflow.
Board members discussed summer programming and a Boys and Girls Club proposal to run a summer program for 13–18-year-olds with bussing from CHMS; the board noted paperwork and timeline challenges and asked staff to prioritize advertising and coordination so summer offerings can be publicized in the district Mirror publication.
Next steps: the Curriculum Committee meeting was scheduled for April 16; the Finance Committee is expected to meet in May; staff will continue recruitment for certified special-education positions and will return with policy or resource recommendations as appropriate.
