District finance staff: 27L educator-compensation payments to be negotiated with union, expected by spring break

At the Feb. 3 Muskegon Public Schools workshop, Catherine Emery, listed in the agenda as the finance presenter, briefed the board on state 27L funds earmarked for educator compensation.
Emery said the 27L money is intended for educator pay and that district negotiators are working with the union on how the funds will be distributed. She said the funds "have to be paid out and can not be backed into any funding already spent i.e. 5% raises given this year." Emery added that individual payments will be modest — "around $500" — with taxes and contributions reducing net amounts.
Emery told the workshop that district staff hope to complete distribution by spring break. The presentation was informational; the board did not take any formal vote or action during the meeting.
