Committee backs bill to let trained school traffic personnel direct pickup/drop-off flows

Mister Hartnett presented the measure, explaining it is intended to relieve school resource officers and reduce congestion. Members asked whether personnel would receive a certification, what training and garments they would wear and whether they may operate on major thoroughfares. Staff and sponsors said training would come from police departments and the criminal justice academy, participants would wear clearly visible garments or equipment and the authority would be limited to pickup and drop-off hours.
After discussion on safety standards and training, the committee adopted the bill and the clerk recorded the vote as 16 aye, 0 nay, and 2 absent.
The bill will be forwarded for further consideration in the legislative process.
