WAVE updates city on vocational training and co‑workspace project; seeks design authorization

Amy West, superintendent of Western Arizona Vocational Education (WAVE), briefed the City Council on May 19 on the WAVE‑City co‑workspace and vocational education project near the fairgrounds and Route 66.
West said the project combines class and lab space, a training/kitchen area, an economic development/co‑workspace area and Mohave College’s Small Business Development Center. She said WAVE is funding the bulk of the project and has reached about 30% design. "We are value engineering right now and looking at ways we can save," West said, noting the team had trimmed square footage and reduced storefront glazing to hold costs. She added the ground lease is approved and the office lease is underway.
On programming, West said WAVE will serve ninth through thirteenth grades with career and technical education — everything from business and computers to welding, HVAC and medical programs — and the facility includes event and flexible training spaces intended for both student instruction and community use. She estimated the large event space capacity currently at around 140–150 people, and cautioned that cuts could reduce that to roughly 125.
Council members asked about parcel coverage and the project’s effect on city operations; West said the building footprint would occupy roughly the west half of the identified parcel at Fairgrounds and Route 66 and that the project timeline aims for occupancy in late 2027 but may slip based on budget and grant outcomes.
No council action was required; staff and WAVE will continue negotiating lease and design details and pursue grant opportunities to fund add‑alternates and program expansions.
