Board hears construction updates, adopts remote learning make-up day plan and announces personnel changes

The Hobbs Municipal Schools board received project and operations updates May 19 and heard several administrative announcements ahead of summer work.
A district projects presenter reported Del Norte Middle School and Hauser replacement projects are on schedule and largely on budget, described ongoing site work and interior finishes, and said staff held a furniture-selection meeting to plan equipment for new spaces. The presenter said HVAC and fire alarm systems at College Lane and Stone are scheduled for presentation to the Public School Capital Outlay Council (PSCOC) in June, and noted recurring roof repairs across older schools.
Superintendent Strickland briefed the board on the district’s remote make-up plan for a winter storm that forced instructional changes earlier in the year. “The day will be structured around students receiving materials for that remote learning day on Friday before they leave ... and then those teachers will be on Google Meet for a period of two hours during that day,” Strickland said, adding staff must complete a total of 4.5 hours to meet contractual requirements. Strickland said principals are responsible for scheduling supplemental activities for staff who do not have assigned students.
Strickland also announced scheduling changes and personnel transitions: the June regular board meeting will move to June 11 at 6 p.m.; Jenny Kavanaugh and Dixie Rosier will be leaving the district (Rosier retiring); and Alex Lopez has been selected as the first principal of Del Norte Middle School when it opens in August.
