Select Board approves special town meeting warrant, votes to recommend indefinite postponement of a petition article

At its May 20 special meeting the Yarmouth Select Board approved and executed the warrant for a special town meeting scheduled for June 24, 2026, at 6 p.m. at Dee Why Intermediate School on Station Avenue in South Yarmouth.

A board member moved to approve and execute the warrant; the motion was seconded and carried by voice vote. The Select Board then discussed a petition article that had recently been before voters and failed at the ballot. The board moved to recommend "do not recommend" on the article and to support a motion to indefinitely postpone it; members agreed the chair should present that motion at the upcoming town meeting. One board member stated that although they were in the minority in not supporting the petition, they thanked petition organizers and voters for their civic engagement.

Town staff confirmed administrative next steps: obtain signatures on the warrant, post and advertise the warrant in accordance with town bylaws and state law, and provide the chair with the assigned motion to present at town meeting. Staff also reported preliminary turnout numbers related to the recent election (57 votes recorded out of 23,052 registered voters in staff's report; transcript speakers later referenced turnout percentages near 14–16 percent), which the board discussed as larger-than-normal participation for a local election.

The board then adjourned the special meeting following the warrant votes.
