Avery County approves roughly $1.4 million for baseball fields and moves ahead on park rebuilds

Staff told the board the county has assembled several grants and insurance proceeds to rebuild parks and sports fields damaged in recent storms, and asked the board to begin design-team selection.
The parks and recreation update listed a Parks & Rec grant of $984,000, a Carolina Hurricanes grant of $125,000 and FEMA funds of $275,000 plus a $21,000 state grant for the baseball-field project, which staff summarized as about $1.4 million for the fields. For Green Valley Park staff said total project funds amount to about $1,100,000 (FEMA $84,000; state grant $970,506; insurance $76,000). Schultz Park also received FEMA, state and Carolina Hurricanes funds for fencing and site work.
Staff said they would start the design-team selection process and pursue private donors to supplement public funds. The board did not withhold approval and the presentation proceeded without recorded opposition. Staff also noted ongoing FEMA coordination for the senior center and other facility repairs; final FEMA numbers for some buildings were pending.
