Mesquite ISD trustees approve administrative contracts and introduce new principals

The Mesquite Independent School District Board of Trustees approved administrative contracts and introduced a group of newly hired administrators during a special meeting. Trustee Robert Seward moved to approve the contracts and Trustee Tia Collier seconded; President Kevin Carbo announced that the motion carried.
Superintendent Dr. Angel Rivera told the board the trustees had received early notification of the personnel recommendations, including resumes and highlights for each candidate, and said the introductions that followed reflected the district’s careful interview process. “The board members received early notification of all the recommendations from administration, including resumes and high notes of each of the candidates,” Rivera said.
Among the appointments the board welcomed: - Dr. Zaida Saldivar, director of bilingual/ESL, whose background includes leadership at the Region 10 Educational Service Center, serving as chief schools officer for Cityscape Schools and directing English learner programming for Garland ISD (she said she was “humbled by God’s grace” and honored to join Mesquite ISD). - Amber Poe, principal of Beasley Elementary, previously an assistant principal at West Mesquite High School and an elementary assistant principal in Irving ISD. - Brenda, named principal of Range Elementary, who has spent 19 years at Range and served as assistant principal and classroom teacher there (transcript spelling of her surname was inconsistent; the district introduction used her first name). - Jose Peterson Torres, principal of Woolly Middle School, a bilingual educator and campus leader with more than 18 years’ experience and U.S. Army service. - Brett Peterson, principal of West Mesquite High School, with 17 years of leadership and classroom experience. - Several assistant principals: Jocelyn Reynolds (Moss Elementary), Eseny Alanis (Rugel/Rugo Elementary), and Lisette Contreras (Seabourn Elementary). - Halima King, principal of Canada Elementary School, whose administrative background includes work as an assistant superintendent and HR director in Cedar Hill ISD and campus leadership in Arlington and Irving ISDs.
Dr. Rivera noted the hiring process created two vacancies at Lawrence and Agnew and that the district is continuing efforts to fill other openings, including a long-standing vacancy at Shands, explaining the district is seeking candidates who fit each campus’s needs.
The board adjourned and President Carbo said the trustees would reconvene at 6:00 p.m. in the Vision Room.
