Superintendent outlines two millage proposals on Aug. 4 ballot

Superintendent Adam Martin said the district will put two school-related millage proposals before voters on Aug. 4 and walked through basic facts in a brief true-or-false session.

Martin introduced the segment by saying, "We're gonna play a game of true and false about the August 4 millages." He confirmed there are two separate initiatives on the ballot: a Waterford-specific non-homestead millage and an Oakland Countywide enhancement millage.

Martin and a participant clarified that the non-homestead millage is not a new tax. A meeting participant answered "That is false," when asked whether the non-homestead millage is a new tax. Martin additionally asked whether funds raised by the non-homestead millage could be used for operational purposes; the participant replied "True," saying the funds could support investments for staff and students.

On the countywide measure, a participant described the Oakland County enhancement millage as a new tax that would provide stable funding for all schools in Oakland County. Martin also noted that the non-homestead millage would not apply to primary residences, with a participant saying it targets businesses and secondary homes.

Martin summarized the two initiatives: the Waterford-specific non-homestead millage is intended to restore the district's full 18 mills to the Waterford School District, while the Oakland Countywide enhancement millage would bring additional funds for every student across Oakland County. The session was informational and did not record any formal motions or votes.
