Committee approves bill to surplus dilapidated former school building in Natchitoches Parish

House Bill 1056, read into the record on May 14, would authorize transfer of a dilapidated former school building in Natchitoches Parish back to State Lands to allow disposal. Representative Young said the building reverted to the agency (Bessie) under a revisionary clause after the school board ceased using it; the property has become uninhabitable and a community eyesore.
Tavares Walk, executive director of the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education, told the committee Bessie has expended funds to maintain the property during the surplus process and seeks to remove it from its books so State Lands may dispose of it. Senator Jenkins moved to report the bill favorably; the committee reported HB 1056 without objection.
