Lawmakers advanced House Bill 1050, a cleanup measure to clarify Class A–D commercial driver licenses, align Louisiana with federal standards and remove the state vision-waiver process. Torella Grama of the Office of Motor Vehicles told the committee the changes mirror federal code and ease processes that previously required a long alternate-vision waiver.
The committee also considered HB 989, which raises the convenience fee public tag agents may collect from $23 to $27. Public tag agents and industry representatives said the fee helps cover employee and overhead costs; private agents warned that repeated fee increases could create a pricing spiral and harm access in rural areas with limited public offices. Jose Bosch (ABC Title, LPTA) said private offices offer additional services and flexible hours that public offices cannot.
Both bills were reported favorably without objection. Members asked agencies to clarify fiscal impacts and whether fees could drive customers from public offices to private agents, but no roll-call vote was recorded in committee minutes. Senators asked sponsors and OMV to coordinate implementation details where system changes are required.
