Chairman Kris Stancil proposed at the May 4 work session that the Board consolidate the monthly Work Session, Executive Session and Regular Board Meeting on the third Monday of each month to reduce scheduling conflicts, improve staff preparation time and ease media coordination with Jasper and Nelson city meetings.
Stancil said the idea would be brought back as a formal agenda item after legal review of Local Act requirements. Commissioners expressed support for exploring the change; no formal vote was taken during the work session.
Miranda McDowell, Director of Internal Operations, provided administrative updates. She said the audit draft is expected to be completed by the end of May with a final presentation to follow at a future Board meeting. McDowell reported five resignations, two new hires and 29 current vacancies in county staffing, and said payroll completed first‑quarter reporting and moved the pay period to Sunday–Saturday to streamline processing. She also noted accounting software updates tied to the "One Big Beautiful Bill Act" had been completed along with staff training.
Bill Wood, Director of External Operations, summarized infrastructure planning: Colditz Trucking will perform a summer paving program covering about 6.5 miles on Henderson Mountain, Big Ridge, Camp, Hood and Gennett Court roads; Chairman Stancil said Colditz had not yet provided a deployment schedule and that Public Works crews are replacing drainage pipes ahead of paving to prevent future disruptions. Wood also updated the Board on airport projects — tarmac rehabilitation and a perimeter fence — both with bids under Georgia DOT review, and said a land‑lease RFP for remaining airport property is being finalized.
Commissioner Josh Tippens asked whether Colditz had established the order for paving. Stancil replied that a deployment schedule had not yet been provided and reiterated the county's approach of addressing drainage before paving. The work session did not include votes to authorize contracts or ordinance changes; those items would return to the Board for formal action as needed.
