At a Grundy County meeting, a staff member reported there are currently no active tuberculosis (TB) cases and described several residents under treatment for latent TB.
The staff member said two residents had already been case-managed and that four additional people—largely one family—have been added to the latent TB caseload. ‘‘It’s all, that's pretty much it’s all 1 family,’’ the staff member said. The staff member added that latent TB is noncontagious but can progress if a person becomes ill or their immune system weakens, and encouraged treatment: ‘‘So we want them to be treated...I really encourage that.’’
The staff member said the county is coordinating with Sunny Hill TB Clinic and local physicians; the transcript names a Joliet provider (Dr. Glen Harris) and references a physician whose name is spelled variably in the record. The staff member noted that referred clients sometimes lack a local provider and therefore are routed to those clinics but are not required to receive care there.
The staff member emphasized that latent TB is not the same as active TB: ‘‘the TB germ is in the body, but it’s not… it can’t be passed on to somebody else,’’ they said, but cautioned that treatment reduces the chance latent infection will become active.
No formal action was recorded on the health report beyond discussion and clarification. Meeting members then moved on to review financial and administrative items.
