The Menands Village Board voted May 20 to join the town and school district in funding a rebuttal appraisal to contest a tax-assessment challenge filed by the owner of 150 Broadway Riverview Center for tax years 2023–2025.
Mayor explained the owner has contested assessments across multiple years and the proposed rebuttal appraisal would cost about $19,000; the attorney representing the municipalities recommended retaining a Buffalo appraisal firm skilled in complex, multi-tenant properties. The village discussed fair cost-sharing; the Mayor proposed splitting the appraisal cost with the town and school district, while one trustee argued the school — as the largest taxing entity — should bear a larger share.
A trustee moved to participate in the appraisal action alongside the town and school district; the motion was seconded and carried. The Mayor and trustees said participation was necessary because a reduction in assessed value could cost the village tens of thousands of dollars over multiple years. The board will coordinate with the town's counsel (Cooper Irving) on retaining the appraisal firm and confirm each jurisdiction's contribution amount.
