Caldwell council shares community updates: hydrant flushing, events, project bids and new staff

During committee reports and staff updates at the May 5 meeting, council members and administrators gave routine community and project information.

Councilman Daniolowicz reported that hydrant flushing has begun and the schedule is posted on the borough website and announced Caldwell Beautification Day set for the Sunday before Memorial Day. He and Councilman Jurgensen attended recent Eagle Scout Court of Honor events and recognized four scouts by name.

Council President Buechner summarized Senior Center offerings and noted the Grover Cleveland Birthplace 250th anniversary events planned for July 4, including historical displays and an ice-cream social. Councilman Brown’s environmental commission report noted 2.98 tons of paper were shredded at a recent event and $2,590.05 was raised for the JCHS Senior Scholarship fund.

Chief Roberts reported police outreach to schools on forthcoming e-bike regulations effective July 19, noting that e-bikes will require DMV registration under the new law. Administrator Alex Palumbo said civic center bids opened last week with the lowest bidder at $2.1 million under review and expected award at the next meeting; a firehouse addition will be advertised for bid soon; a temporary certificate of occupancy for 80 Bloomfield is expected around May 18 pending generator testing; and Manny Vasilescu has begun as Director of Community Development.

Borough Attorney Craig Bossong had no report. There were no public comments recorded during the meeting.
