Renovation of former Gina D. Dock School advances; district aims for September 2027 opening

Sean Haley, owner’s project manager with Watermark, said asbestos floor‑tile removal and preparatory enabling work were beginning and that the design team will begin an existing conditions survey. Work this summer will include water and fire service upgrades and geotechnical test pitting for a new elevator; a new sprinkler system and full electrification are part of the scope.
Haley outlined funding: $4 million in city capital approved by the City Council and a $5 million Mass CEC grant aimed at mechanical and electrical upgrades. He said the district would provide new furniture and fixtures from its FY27 budget and the project aimed to open in September 2027. Committee members asked about parking and staging during construction; Haley said parking will be limited and the city is adjusting nearby street direction to accommodate a new bus drop and site logistics.
Administrators said they will continue design coordination, use temporary construction fencing and pursue additional grants for playground equipment. The committee expressed broad support and interest in ensuring the facility meets ADA and electrification goals.
