Daly Middle School and Lowell regional team honored after Knowledge Bowl wins

Daly Middle School and members of Lowell’s regional Knowledge Bowl team were honored at the Lowell School Committee meeting on May 20, 2026, after claiming both the city title and a regional championship.
Superintendent Skinner introduced the recognition, and coach Karen Miranda told the committee she values “preparation” as the team’s defining habit. “Studying works,” Miranda said, recounting a podcast she had recently heard and using it to praise the students’ sustained practice.
Co‑coach Alejandro Bonilla, who said he has coached several of these students since fifth grade, thanked the district and described the program as a formative part of students’ development. Student speakers — including captain Elliot Kolakowski and other members of the Daly and Lowell regional teams — reflected on teamwork, practice routines and the pride of representing their schools.
Committee members praised the students and coaches. Member comments highlighted how the program fuels student engagement and provides leadership and academic enrichment across multiple middle schools. The committee invited the students to pose for a photo with members before the meeting moved on to other agenda items.
The recognition underscored the district’s emphasis on extracurricular academic competitions as a route to student growth and recruitment into high‑school programs such as televised quiz competitions and other citywide academic opportunities.
