Village staff told trustees on Jan. 13 that SBC Waste Solutions is proposing an enhancement to the village's organics collection intended to increase participation.
Under the proposal, residents who supply their own secure‑lidded bin could enroll in organics collection at no additional cost; households that prefer a rental cart would continue to pay but the company is proposing a simplified $12 flat monthly rate rather than the current $12–$16 sliding scale. Staff said registration would be required so collectors can identify participating bins and avoid contamination.
Staff noted last year's pilot began in July and had low enrollment — roughly 10 households — and said SBC would provide outreach materials including an updated magnet and flyer explaining what can and cannot be composted. Trustees asked whether SBC could provide a list of approved vendors for properly sized and sealed containers; staff said they would request vendor recommendations and that smaller toters are typically used for organics.
Trustee Slavic said the program is a positive enhancement; trustees and staff discussed how neighbors sometimes share a paid toter, the need for lids that seal to prevent odors and pests, and the goal of reducing contamination by clarifying unacceptable items such as compostable plates and serviceware.
What happens next: Staff will follow up with SBC to obtain vendor recommendations, finalize registration and outreach materials, and bring back details to the board before rolling out the expanded program in April.
