Chaska proclaims May 2026 "Poppy Days"; American Legion Auxiliary member says Beyond the Yellow Ribbon chapter is ceasing operations

Libby Fairchild, who identified herself as a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, addressed the Chaska City Council on May 18 about poppy distribution and Memorial Day traditions. Fairchild described the poppy’s history as a memorial flower tied to the poem 'In Flanders Fields' and read the poem aloud to the council.
Mayor or presiding officer read and presented a proclamation recognizing the Chaska American Legion Auxiliary Unit 57 Poppy Days and proclaiming May 2026 as Poppy Days in the City of Chaska to encourage citizens to wear poppies and to support local veterans programs.
Fairchild said volunteers will distribute poppies through American Legion posts and accept donations (she said the proceeds stay local to support veterans). She also reported that Beyond the Yellow Ribbon of Chaska has ceased operations: the small volunteer group could no longer sustain the work and several members have moved away; Fairchild said many of the services and activities are now being handled by the Carver County Veterans Council.
The council thanked Fairchild, noted local Memorial Day events (including a ceremony at Veterans Park on May 25 at 10 a.m.), and urged residents to support local veterans organizations.
