Hamilton County approves confidential $186,000 well‑field study to map local water resources

County attorney Sullivan described a proposed Wessler Engineering contract "in an amount not to exceed $186,000" to test-drill locations and identify available water within Hamilton County to inform decisions about protecting local water supplies. Sullivan said the study would provide data to determine where water could be protected, owned or otherwise managed by the county.
Commissioner Mark Heirbrandt said he would discuss the matter with state legislative leadership before a public resolution, citing concerns that Indiana or other entities might seek water for outside projects. Commissioner Christine Altman moved to approve the study "subject to the requirement of confidentiality." Commissioner Steven C. Dillinger seconded the motion, which carried unanimously.
County staff said environmental and federal regulations would apply to any future land acquisitions or protective actions; the study’s findings will be treated as deliberative material until the county chooses to act.
