On May 4, Onvida Health representatives told the Yuma County Board of Supervisors that planned healthcare investments and partnerships are expected to generate substantial local economic benefits.
Jim Rounds, president of Rounds Consulting, told the Board that healthcare investments tied to Onvida Health ‘‘support approximately 8,800 jobs and generate an estimated $1.5 billion in economic output.’’ Dr. Robert Trenschel, president and CEO of Onvida Health, described a package of initiatives including a University of Arizona‑Phoenix collaboration to open a rural regional medical‑school branch in Arizona, a Veterans Administration medical clinic expected to open in late summer 2027, a Health Career Center in partnership with Arizona Western College slated for spring 2027, and the San Luis Health Campus, a 24‑bed full‑service hospital planned to open in spring 2027.
Board members praised the developments. Vice‑Chairman Lines commended the Onvida team for committing to expanded healthcare services, and Supervisor Simmons said a VA clinic has been "long overdue," given the county's veteran population.
Why it matters: The projects would expand local access to care, create training and residency pathways, and—if realized—could have significant economic and workforce effects in Yuma County. The presentation gave county leaders specific project timelines and partners to consider in future planning.
What’s next: Presenters thanked the Board; the Board offered support but no formal financial commitments or approvals were recorded in the meeting minutes.
