Board appoints Dr. Kristen Clark as director of teaching and learning

The Lakewood City Board of Education voted on a one-reading motion to appoint Dr. Kristen Clark as the district's director of teaching and learning.

Mr. Ose, the district's director of teaching and learning, introduced the recommendation and described Clark’s work as coordinator of elementary teaching and learning, noting her role leading curriculum committees, implementing new materials and assessments, and supporting the district’s shift toward the state’s science-of-reading expectations. "We had an outstanding pool of candidates," he said, and described Clark as a system-level thinker who supports principals and teachers through professional learning.

The motion to appoint Dr. Kristen Clark was made by a board member (S3), seconded and approved by roll-call vote. After the vote, Dr. Clark addressed the board: "I'm truly grateful and humbled by this opportunity," she said, adding that she is excited to continue supporting teaching and learning and the Lakewood community in the new capacity.

Board members and district leaders cited Clark's prior experience—working as an instructional coach, directing community-based programs, and serving in curriculum and leadership roles in several Ohio districts—as reasons for the appointment. The administration also pointed to Clark's work preparing the district for the state's new math plan and the district's compliance work related to the science of reading.

The appointment takes effect immediately; board action was taken in open session with a recorded roll-call vote. The board plans to publish meeting minutes and personnel updates on the district website.

Dr. Clark said she is supported by her family and expressed enthusiasm about beginning her new duties.
