Board approves first read of student cell‑phone policy mandating school‑level plans

The Providence School Board approved a districtwide student personal electronic device policy for first reading on May 20 after district leaders described how implementation will occur at the school level.
Lisa DiMartino and Director Mihangaboo (district staff) explained the state law requires each school to develop a personal device plan that covers physical access to phones, communication with parents, enforcement protocols and staff training. Dr. Nicole Onye, chief of opportunity and access, said the district is also preparing day‑to‑day implementation protocols and is drafting separate elementary and secondary guidance.
The motion to approve the policy for a first read passed by voice vote. Board members asked for more detail about day‑to‑day rules to be developed by district staff and for the materials to be shared with the policy committee for additional review prior to final adoption.
