County engineer updates projects; board approves $148,512 pavement‑marking contract

Mike Lacuniti, introduced to the board as the county engineer, gave a detailed operations update covering bridge work, crew schedules and equipment training. Lacuniti said Bridge 307’s piers and caps have been constructed and that concrete work for the superstructure is scheduled in the coming days; he also reviewed ongoing grader and mowing schedules and said summer mowing crews start May 26.

During the presentation supervisors discussed changing surfacing materials in light of rising asphalt prices. "Concrete can give you 40 to 50 years of design life," Lacuniti said, while noting concrete’s higher capital cost and asphalt’s operational flexibility. Board members asked about life-cycle trade-offs and potential pretreatment for roads with wet subbases.

The board considered an advertised bid for pavement markings and moved to hire Cam Line for highway striping work at $148,512. The motion was seconded and passed unanimously.

Lacuniti and supervisors also discussed localized safety complaints (notably on W14), including school‑bus mechanical failures and vehicle damage caused by rough road conditions, and the potential for site-specific repairs such as subbase stabilization or targeted graveling before full rehabilitation. He recommended field assessments at problem locations to document worst-case conditions and determine appropriate remedies.

The board took no additional funding votes for major rehabilitation projects at this meeting but directed staff to continue project scoping and to provide cost estimates for larger treatments.

The pavement-marking contract award is scheduled to be administratively executed following the board motion.
