Burlington HPC recommends two properties for May preservation awards

The Burlington Historic Preservation Commission recommended two properties for the city's May preservation awards and will forward both nominations to the city council for formal presentation.

Planning staff described two nominations at the commission's May meeting: a residential property on Glencoe that appears on historic surveys and a downtown commercial property at 341 South Main Street (Suite 100) whose owners recently completed renovations.

The downtown tenant who spoke to the commission described a restoration that retained original floors and woodwork and used thrifted fixtures and salvage where possible. "We painted the ceilings black... the countertop there is original to the building," the tenant said, adding that the project aimed to create an accessible, welcoming space for the community. The tenant credited building owner Jeff Wilkins for supporting the project and said the business began planning in July 2024, started renovations in March 2025 and opened in May 2025.

Commissioners noted the two nominations represent different types of preservation work — residential and commercial — and moved to recommend both properties. The motion carried by unanimous vote of members present. Planning staff said the awards and a proclamation will be presented at the next city council meeting on Tuesday, the nineteenth of May, and that property owners will receive a placard to display.

The commission suggested the nominations would help highlight historic assets downtown and encourage foot traffic; staff offered GIS and IT support to incorporate nominated properties into an interactive walking-tour resource.

The commission's recommendation will be transmitted to the city council for final recognition and a proclamation at the upcoming council meeting.
