School superintendent details summer session, lighting upgrades and staffing changes

Superintendent Cotton reported summer school will run June 22'July 22 with about 140 students registered so far, described upgraded lighting on a student path for safety, and detailed staffing changes including an interim facilities director and an upcoming hire for the high school leader.
Superintendent Cotton briefed the joint meeting on the school district's near-term programs, safety improvements and personnel changes.
Summer session is scheduled for June 22 through July 22, Monday through Thursday with Fridays off; the district will provide breakfast and lunch for students and community meals. Registration stood at about 140 students at the time of the report (down from 145 at the same point last year), and Cotton said she expects more registrations after high-school seniors complete exams and placements are finalized.
In response to a question, Cotton said the elementary schedule will be roughly 8:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.; middle-school and high-school sessions will run about 8 a.m. to noon.
On safety improvements, Cotton said student focus groups raised concerns about lighting on the path east of the high school. The district engaged Piper Power to install brighter lighting on that pathway and will study additional locations for similar upgrades to improve safety for after-school activities and evening practices.
On staffing, Cotton reported facilities director Matt Russ departed in March and Ken McIntyre (previously the HVAC manager) has served as interim director of facilities and grounds since mid-March. The district is in the final rounds of interviews for a new high-school leader and expects to present a candidate to the board before the 2026-27 school year.
Other calendar items: last student day is June 10, last staff day is June 11, and high-school graduation is scheduled for June 13 at 1 p.m. in Novak Fieldhouse. The district will host K-4, K-5, fifth-grade and eighth-grade ceremonies during the school day.
Next steps: district staff will continue recruiting to complete the 2026-27 staffing plan, monitor summer-session enrollment, and follow up on lighting and creek-cleanup work coordinated with the village.
