Yerington proclaims Children's Mental Health Action Week, hears county child-protection presentation and honors state poetry champion

The Yerington City Council on April 27 issued a proclamation designating May 3-9, 2026 as Children's Mental Health Action Week and heard a presentation from Lyon County Human Services on child abuse prevention and family reunification efforts.
Mayor John J. Garry read and signed the proclamation urging community organizations and citizens to "work toward meeting the mental health needs of every child in Yerington and unite to promote acceptance of children with mental health issues and their families." Lyon County Human Services representative Jenna Dykes, Division of Children and Family Services representative Kandee Mortenson and Lyon County CASA director Mary Smith described partnerships that prioritize keeping children in their communities and supporting reunification when possible. Commander Ryan Powell of the Lyon County Sheriff's Office described investigative coordination with CPS and the District Attorney's Office.
The council also recognized Mari Basaca Fuentes, a Yerington resident and the 2026 Nevada Poetry Out Loud State Champion. Interim City Manager Jerry Bryant introduced Ms. Fuentes, who gave a poetry presentation and received an award from Councilman Omar Lopez and Interim City Manager Bryant.
The presentations were informational; no formal council action beyond the proclamation was recorded in the April 27 meeting minutes.
