Yerington council reviews tentative FY2026-27 budget, schedules final vote for May 26

The Yerington City Council on April 27 reviewed the tentative fiscal year 2026-27 budget and set May 26, 2026 as the date for final consideration. Interim City Manager Jerry Bryant said the projections require the council to prioritize "absolute city needs over wants" and that some departments may experience cuts to avoid further city debt.

Bryant told the council he is negotiating specific figures with the local police department and is working with staff to identify areas where funds can be reduced while protecting core services. "As the budget is not yet finalized, this will be a topic on a future City Council agenda. May 26, 2026 will be the date of consideration to approve the final budget," Bryant said.

Council discussion focused on balancing essential operations and capital needs. Resident Scott Draper urged the council during public comment to consider the long-term effects of cuts on public works equipment, saying he has seen "much of the equipment is in poor condition" and asking the council to keep critical infrastructure needs in mind.

No formal budget adoption occurred at the April 27 meeting; the council approved moving the tentative budget forward for further consideration and set the procedural schedule for the May 26 vote. Council members who made and seconded the motion are recorded in the meeting transcript as Councilman Omar Lopez and Councilman Shane Martin; the transcript records the motion as approved unanimously.
