Yarmouth panel votes to explore replacing broken digital visitor board, flags sign bylaw limits

Committee member Pete Malpass moved that staff research options to repair or replace the inoperable digital community information board and to coordinate with Mary Vilbon of the Chamber and town IT. The committee approved the motion and asked staff to return with cost estimates and procurement options.
Mary Vilbon and others said the board at the Chamber/visitor center has been out of service for about a year despite repair attempts and a purchase order of about $4,000. Eldridge said IT has worked on the device but has not yet found a complete solution and that she will solicit quotes for replacement hardware if necessary.
Members discussed town sign bylaws that constrain the number and type of electronic signs allowed; Tom Nicanall and others recommended clearer, pictorial sign guidance in the town’s CivicPlus pages so businesses can understand which signage is permitted. The group also revisited a prior wayfinding proposal (about $55,000 as presented previously) as a possible economic development or grant-funded project.
On the motion, Pete Malpass said he would coordinate the initial vendor outreach and work with Mary and IT; the committee voted in favor and directed staff to return with costs and a proposed timeline ahead of the summer season.
