Superintendent (presenter) referenced an older Habib & Associates facilities report and a newer enrollment study and said the high school "does meet our educational programmatic needs" and that, with investments such as new roofs and HVAC, the building could continue to serve the district for decades. The superintendent added that, "we do not see anywhere in the short term or even really the longer term, the need for a new high school."
Committee members questioned how often facility studies are updated; staff and members said Habib reports are typically refreshed on a roughly five‑to‑ten‑year cadence and that the district will run an asset inventory this summer. Facilities manager Matt Meehan (referenced in discussion) will lead a barcoding inventory so contractors and staff can quickly see maintenance history and replacement timing for major assets.
Members also discussed whether roof and HVAC choices should be designed for 20, 25 or 30 years of service. Staff noted two data drops tied to MSBA work, expected June 9 and June 23, and said the most meaningful conversations will follow those reports. Committee members pressed that the MSBA interaction and enrollment projections will be the primary drivers in any decision about replacement versus renovation.
The committee did not take action at this meeting; members characterized the conversation as preparatory and directed staff and the school building committee to report back as MSBA data and the asset inventory become available.
