District staff outline summer renovation timeline and bond-driven projects

RSU 40/MSAD 40 staff told the facilities and transportation subcommittee that major summer work is planned at district schools and that detailed phasing will depend on the June bond vote.
The district’s staff member in charge of operations said crews have broken ground on a biomass boiler and will begin vertical work after footing and wall work in early June, and that movers and asbestos remediation work are scheduled to follow student dismissal. "Around the beginning of June, we're gonna start disassembling the two current boilers at Menominee Valley High School," the staff member said, adding that contractors expect to begin asbestos remediation about the start of July and that the district plans for three-to-six weeks of intensive remediation work.
Staff framed the water-treatment work as a minor design change: rather than installing one 1,000‑gallon holding tank, the district will add four 200‑gallon tanks to the existing system, which staff said simplifies installation and reduces the need to demo an adjacent wall. The presenter said all modifications have been forwarded to the state drinking-water authority and that approvals are expected; he named Jeff Twitchell as the contractor handling district water-treatment systems.
Committee members pressed for clarity about the asbestos scope and sequencing. The operations staff said floor tiles embedded in concrete will be addressed when trenching and sewer-line work expose them, and additional ceiling‑tile testing in the library and guidance wing will determine whether further remediation is needed. "I would expect that certainly we'll have 99% of it remediated this summer, and any remaining would be done the following summer," the staff member said.
On contracting and readiness, staff said some contracts are already in place: the asbestos remediation contractor (based in Falmouth) and the water‑treatment contractor have been selected, while EEI, the district’s energy‑savings contractor, will act as general contractor for bond‑funded work and solicit subcontractor bids if the bond passes.
Staff also urged that the facilities subcommittee continue to meet over the summer to coordinate operations and the bond schedule. "There’s gonna be a lot happening if the bond passes," the chair said, recommending tours of district facilities for the subcommittee and staff to synchronize planning.
The committee did not take a vote on the bond itself; staff described next steps and said additional project details will be available after June 9.
