District outlines 12-month refresh for strategic plan through 2027

The Stanwood-Camano School District board on May 19 heard a presentation on a planned refresh of the district strategic plan, which the district says runs through 2027 and will be updated rather than rebuilt.
Director of Communications Evan Caldwell told the board the district will pair results from an annual community survey with multiple data sources and the Academic Advisory Team (AAC) to refine priorities, preserve effective goals and prune others. "Our strategic plan which runs through 2027, so the end of next year, which is why we're starting to talk about the process to go through a refresh here," Caldwell said.
Why it matters: the strategic plan sets district priorities and performance measures for curriculum, student supports and community engagement. Caldwell said survey responses show higher satisfaction among people closer to schools and recommended expanding outreach methods, including more texting, to engage broader community participation.
The presentation outlined a timeline that includes: continued data collection over the summer, drafting by the AAC in early fall, review of early-learning goals in late fall and a recommendation from a community-representative committee in May 2027. Superintendent O'Banau said the AAC will draft recommendations for the board to consider and that the Superintendent Student Leadership Team (SSLT) will be used to lift student voice during the process.
Board members pressed for clarity about how AAC recommendations already raised at recent AAC meetings are being incorporated; staff said the posted presentation was an interim draft and that committee-suggested timeline adjustments can be incorporated as the process proceeds. Caldwell said the refresh will attach both qualitative and quantitative measures to revised goals so progress can be tracked.
Next steps: staff will continue to gather survey and assessment data, refine focus questions with the AAC, and return to the board regularly with updates as the refresh proceeds toward a community recommendation next spring.
