Fayette County commissioners voted May 19 to waive individual building-permit fees for a remediation grant, a move commissioners and staff said will leave more of the grant funding available to property owners.
A presenter asked the board to authorize the fee waiver for the remediation grant—referred to in the meeting as the "Okra" remediation grant—saying permits would still be required but fees should be waived because the work is funded by grant money and many recipients are older or low-income. "They'll still require to have permits, but waiving the fees... because it's a grant money," the presenter said.
A commissioner moved to waive all permit fees associated with the grant and the chair seconded; the motion was made and carried. Staff noted the program initially listed 20 properties, two later became ineligible after completing roof repairs, one person was hospitalized and 17 properties remain eligible. Meeting discussion described the grant as providing up to $25,000 per property within a larger allocation.
Staff also said a contractor meeting had been held, bids are due on the second of the month with an opening at the commissioners' meeting that afternoon, and a city council moratorium related to the work has been adopted. Commissioners directed staff to proceed with the application and procurement steps needed to implement the program.
The board did not publish a roll-call tally in the meeting record; minutes show the motion was "made and carried."
