Council approves interlocal agreement with airport authority for firefighting services

The council considered and approved an ordinance authorizing the mayor to execute an interlocal cooperation agreement (up to three years) with the Birmingham Airport Authority to provide management and staffing of the airport fire station and aircraft rescue and firefighting services.
The clerk read that the Airport Authority will reimburse the city for full salary-burden expenses for firefighters assigned to Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport and will reimburse overtime costs for duties performed at the airport. Council members voiced support; the item required unanimous consent as an item of permanent operation and the council adopted it.
Council members noted a recent visit to airport facilities and praised the agreement as a renewal of services that supports airport safety. The ordinance passed and the agreement will be implemented by the mayor’s office in coordination with Birmingham Fire Rescue Services.
